Emergency and Admitting:
This project consisted of three components: remodel and expansion of the Emergency Department, remodel of the Admitting Department, and renovation and expansion of the lobby. After analyzing their needs and the existing space available, we worked with Lourdes staff to create the most efficient layout for the various departments.
The remodeled Emergency Department now includes two new exam rooms, clean and soiled utilities, reception area and triage. The expansion includes a glassed-in waiting area that evokes a feeling of warmth and openness to patients awaiting treatment.
With new exam rooms expanding into the existing lobby, Lourdes’ goal was to create a dramatic new lobby with ample lighting. The design showcases a 16-foot tall water feature behind a backlit cross, providing a welcoming entrance into the hospital facility. Birch wood panels with a deep cherry stain throughout the remodeled and expanded areas lend to a warm, inviting environment.
Inside the new lobby, patients are greeted by a reception and admitting desk, espresso area and gift shop. Adjacent to those areas are private admitting stations and support offices.
Master Planning
Master planning for Lourdes’ main hospital campus began in 2006 and included the emergency department, lobby, gift shop, waiting area, admitting, chapel, and additional parking in front of the hospital and across the street to the east. Also considered were the 1920’s Building fire escape façade remodel, and a new addition between the 1950’s and 1980’s Buildings.
An architectural rendering shows Lourdes’ hospital campus with the existing hospital blocked out and the location of new and future projects. The rendering layout contributes to the study of future design impact on the campus, and provides a tool to show hospital staff different possibilities for future growth. The renderings are also used in Lourdes’ fundraising efforts.
Surgery
In order to accommodate the rising demand for orthopedic surgery, in 2007 Lourdes Medical Center undertook an expansion to their surgical services. The addition includes three new orthopedic surgery suites and extended central sterile supply, and the remodeled area includes three new pre-op holding bays.
Ambulatory outpatient services were also enhanced with the addition of 13 holding bays, nurse station, restrooms, and staff lounge. Existing ambulatory outpatient areas were remodeled, including two existing GI labs, one new GI lab, larger scope cleanup, clean room, and soiled utility. The design of the hospital’s exterior connects the existing brick with some of the new stucco from other parts of the facility.
With the new ambulatory addition, Lourdes’ goal was to create a warm inviting space to patients that are preparing for day surgery or recovering from surgery. This was accomplished by a 60 foot long translucent skylight that filters natural light into the space evoking a feeling of warmth and openness.
Lourdes’ dedication to life safety and the extent of construction in progress necessitated a major electrical infrastructure upgrade. This upgrade will ensure Lourdes’ continued efficient function of their campus.
Lourdes Chapel
The new chapel at Lourdes Medical Center was an extension of the lobby remodel. The existing chapel was obscure and difficult to find; however, in its new location near the hospital’s main entrance, the chapel is now more accessible to patients and visitors.
Thorough planning went into the design of the new chapel to create a space that is inviting for worship, prayer and quiet meditation. A rose window above the chapel entrance and 12 stained glass panels welcome the public inside.
The vaulted ceiling includes accent lighting that creates a warm, soothing glow. The patterned plaster walls evoke the feel of an old cathedral, and the stained glass window and copper cross at the front provide a sacred focal point for the chapel.
